(Later I will tell what guided me in choosing languages to study)
If you want to travel
It's easy to guess that you should learn a language with highest speakers for 100% pleasure:
1. Mandarin (935 millions)
2. Spanish (390 millions)
3. English (365 millions)
4. Hindi (295 millions)
5. Arabic (280 millions)
6. Portuguese (205 millions)
If you want to make a career
Choose something that is spoken in well-developed countries. It can be Chinese, German, English, Japanese, Spanish, etc. The flexibility of language skills will definitely help you find a job in global companies.
If you`re into engines, cars or mechanical engineering
I think you should learn German. It's a country which makes Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Volkswagen after all.
If you want to learn something easy
I would suggest French, Spanish or Italian. For Ukrainians - Polish
If you want to raise the challenge bar higher but only a little bit
German, Indonesian can be quite good choice.
If you wnat an actual challenge but still want a Latin alphabet
Hungarian, Finnish, Estonian, Polish would work well for English-speaking people.
If you want something that doesn't use Latin alphabet, but something that is still somewhat familiar
Ukrainian is my suggestion (or any Cyrillic language)
If you want a real challenge
Try Korean, Thai, Mongolian, Hindi, Hebrew or even Armenian.
If you want an insanely difficult challenge 💀
Choose Arabic, Chinese or Japanese. Moreover, employers will be thrilled to bits to hire a specialist with such valuable knowledge.
If you want to be able to speak to as many people as possible
Mandarin, Spanish, Hindi, Arabic are great options, as they have a sizable speaking population.
If you want to be unique and study a language that no one else really studies
Georgian, Vietnamese, Lithuanian, Thai - that's what you're looking for.
If you want to travel here in Ukraine
Learn Ukrainian (not russian, seriously😒). It ranks 44th in the world in terms of the number of native speakers. In addition, it is just an extremely beautiful, melodious and rich language. And I will tell you a secret, it will soon become one of the most widely spoken in the world, don't even doubt it 😏
There must be some other great languages for other great choices which I do not know. You can google for specific languages. Also, if you're someone in the 21st century, learn JavaScript or Python. I know there are millions of people who are fluent or those who feel in their bones that they want to be fluent in it.
"You live a new life for every language you speak. If you know only one language, you live only once" - Chinese proverb
Have a nice day 💗

I like your point that programming languages are languages as well. It is so true! It's even in the name, yet for some people it come as a surprise :)
